Washington, D.C.; May 19, 2020. Reports indicate that the White House will likely agree with Canada and Mexico to extend travel restrictions and land border control measures implemented in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

The US implemented travel restrictions in March that barred non-essential travel to the US for persons that are not US citizens, US lawful permanent residents or current visa holders. The travel restrictions have been agreed with both Canada and Mexico, and have been extended previously in April. The current travel restrictions expire on May 21, 2020.

Travel restrictions have not barred commercial transport of goods between US and Canada and the US and Mexico.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also suggested last week that the US-Canada border would likely remain closed through June.

The rules curbing travel to the US are thus likely to remain in place even as both the US and Canada take their first cautious steps towards reopening parts of their economies during May and June.
