Toronto, Canada, March 22, 2021: Our sources indicate that the Canadian federal government has not given up entirely on the Owner-Operator variant of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) programme. This successful visa program was popular for entrepreneurs. Its attractiveness was the exemption it offered from the prevailing wage and recruitment requirements of the LMIA programme, as well as the ability for business owners to sponsor their own LMIA through their Canadian company. We suspect that any re-vamped version of the Owner-Operator LMIA programme will require a prevailing wage and strict compliance with other features of the general LMIA programme.
We will keep reporting on this important and evolving issue.
